Wildfire Season Preparedness: A Timely Reminder from ICBC

July 2024 Dogtooth fire near golden BC

As wildfire season approaches in B.C., ICBC has shared a helpful reminder for drivers and property owners to review their coverage, prepare important documents, and think ahead before evacuation alerts or orders are issued.

Their reminder includes a few practical steps worth reviewing now:

  • Check your vehicle insurance coverage before wildfire risk increases

  • Gather important documents in case you need to leave quickly

  • Prepare a grab-and-go kit

  • Follow evacuation alerts, local authorities, DriveBC, and EmergencyInfoBC

  • Plan ahead if travel routes or road access may change

Here in the Columbia Valley and East Kootenays, we know how quickly seasonal conditions can shift. Fast snow melt, flooding concerns, storms, and wildfire risk can all affect access, travel, and property safety.

As arborists, we would add one more practical reminder: take a look around your property.

Dead trees, heavy brush, ladder fuels, branches over roofs, and overgrown access routes can all become bigger concerns during wildfire season or emergency response situations.

You do not need to panic. But it is worth being proactive.
