Wildfire Season Preparedness: A Timely Reminder from ICBC

July 2024 Dogtooth fire near golden BC

As wildfire season approaches in B.C., ICBC has shared a helpful reminder for drivers and property owners to review their coverage, prepare important documents, and think ahead before evacuation alerts or orders are issued.

Their reminder includes a few practical steps worth reviewing now:

  • Check your vehicle insurance coverage before wildfire risk increases

  • Gather important documents in case you need to leave quickly

  • Prepare a grab-and-go kit

  • Follow evacuation alerts, local authorities, DriveBC, and EmergencyInfoBC

  • Plan ahead if travel routes or road access may change

Here in the Columbia Valley and East Kootenays, we know how quickly seasonal conditions can shift. Fast snow melt, flooding concerns, storms, and wildfire risk can all affect access, travel, and property safety.

As arborists, we would add one more practical reminder: take a look around your property.

Dead trees, heavy brush, ladder fuels, branches over roofs, and overgrown access routes can all become bigger concerns during wildfire season or emergency response situations.

You do not need to panic. But it is worth being proactive.

Why Professional Standards Matter More Than Price

When a tree is leaning toward your home…
When storm damage creates a hazard…
When wildfire mitigation becomes urgent…

You don’t just need someone to cut wood.

You need someone who understands how trees behave under load, lean, tension, and gravity.

In British Columbia, tree falling is one of the most technically demanding and hazardous trades. Yet in the residential space, standards can vary widely from one operator to the next.

That variation is where risk enters the picture.

Black Knot Fungus: Why Dormant-Season Pruning Matters

Black Knot Fungus: Why Dormant-Season Pruning Matters

Black knot fungus is a common and serious disease affecting cherry and plum trees (Prunus species) throughout British Columbia. Caused by Apiosporina morbosa, it appears as hard, black, swollen growths on branches that restrict sap flow, weaken structure, and lead to progressive dieback if left untreated.

In our region, cool and wet spring conditions create ideal circumstances for the disease to spread—making early intervention and correct timing essential.

🌿 Tree Care with a Conscience: Protecting Nesting Birds During the Migratory Window

Why Nesting Season Matters 🕊️

Each spring and summer, migratory birds return to the Columbia Valley and East Kootenays to build nests, raise their young, and play a vital role in our ecosystems. These birds often nest in trees and shrubs, and disturbing an active nest—accidentally or not—can have serious consequences.

In Canada, birds are protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act, which prohibits the disturbance or destruction of active nests. That’s why timing and awareness are everything when it comes to tree work during nesting season.
